Hang Up and Drive – My Tip for the Ripple Effect

Hang Up and Drive – My Tip for the Ripple Effect

I just got back from the Wyoming Safety & Workforce Summit in Cheyenne, Wyoming.  It was a well run event filled with 2 days of engaging keynote speakers, educational breakout sessions, and networking safety professionals.

I was moved to write this post because of the keynote speech this morning that touched us all by Jacy Good. She touched every one of us in a powerful way with her story of recovery from a car crash caused by a distracted driver (you can find more on her story and her advocacy for cell-free roads here)

The lunchtime conversations (of safety professionals mind you) consisted of admissions of how we all have been guilty of using our phones more than we should while driving (check your email at a stoplight anyone?)  It was then that I made a commitment to myself and my family that I would join this crusade.

Here is my tip to continue the ripple:

I remember Jacy saying how she changed her voicemail to say, “I might be driving so leave a message and I will call you back WHEN I’M SAFE.”  That lead me to think about how my iPhone has an option when there is an incoming call to touch a single button and send a message to the caller.  But none of the provided messages have the same impact that Jacy’s did so I searched if there was a way to customize them and THERE IS!

Step 1: Go to “Settings” > “Phone” > under CALLS find “Respond with Text”

Step 2: Type your custom message!
