For some parts of the country, summer weather has taken hold back in early May, but here in Colorado we are finally enjoying some of the heat. It is time to enjoy my late afternoon “perch” in my driveway, supervising my kids from my camp chair (beverage often included.) Our street is full of kids riding bikes and scooters, playing tag or hide & seek, and throwing a football, baseball or water balloon.
THIS is what being a kid is all about. THIS is the solution to child obesity. My 4-year-old son just learned how to ride his bike without training wheels and as he pedals up the gradual hill he hollers at me,
“My legs are hurting!”
“That’s your muscles working!” I reply, “Keep going and they get stronger!”
Make a commitment to get stronger this summer. Whether you increase your fitness from exercise, or your work is your exercise, muscle strength provides many long term benefits. Any demanding activity that uses the whole body for an extended period can be used as a viable fat loss/muscle gain exercise. So you could circuit train, run sprint intervals, be “it” in a game of tag with your kids, throw bales of hay, use your flower pots for weighted squats…the list goes on.
Enjoy more activity and playtime this summer and ride the momentum into the fall in order to change your habits and lifestyle.
